2020 Kentucky Derby odds, top predictions: Surprising picks by same expert who’s hit six straight races

The 2020 Kentucky Derby endured a number of changes thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. The event was moved from May 2 to Saturday, Sept. 5, there won’t be any fans allowed on the hallowed grounds of Churchill Downs, and the race is now the second leg of the 2020 Triple Crown schedule after the Belmont Stakes was held in June. Legendary trainer Barclay Tagg’s Tiz the Law won by 3 3/4 lengths over Dr Post at Belmont Park and then stormed to an impressive five-length win in a tuneup at the Travers Stakes last month. Should you back Tiz the Law with your 2020 Kentucky Derby bets?

Tiz the Law is the 4-5 favorite in the latest 2020 Kentucky Derby odds from William Hill and he’s also listed at 11-4 to complete the Triple Crown. However, he’ll be lined up next to the most talented field he’s faced in his career when he goes to post at 7:01 p.m. ET, with proven winners like Art Collector (9-2) and Honor A.P. (7-1) making their American Classic debuts. Before making any horse racing predictions, you’ll want to see the latest 2020 Kentucky Derby picks from SportsLine’s Jody Demling.

A fixture in the horse racing world who has been writing about, talking about and betting on races for years, Demling enters the 2020 Kentucky Derby on a major heater on his horse racing picks. He has the picked the winner in six straight races: the Saudi Cup, Gotham Stakes, Rebel Stakes, Louisiana Derby, Florida Derby and Belmont Stakes. At the Belmont, the first Triple Crown race of 2020, Demling called Tiz the Law the class of the field and he pulled away for a convincing victory.

This is the same handicapper who hit the Oaks-Derby double at Churchill Downs nine times in the last 11 years. That means he held a ticket with the winners of both the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby all but twice in his last 11 tries. Anyone who has followed him is way up.

Now, Demling has released his early 2020 Kentucky Derby picks, predicting where every horse will finish. He’s sharing all of it at SportsLine.

2020 Kentucky Derby expert predictions

One surprise: Demling is fading Authentic, even though he’s one of the favorites in the Kentucky Derby odds 2020 at 10-1. It’s been a trying summer for Bob Baffert, as he was suspended for 15 days in July because two of his horses tested positive for PEDs. One of those horses, Charlatan, was originally declared the winner of the Arkansas Derby and was viewed as one of the 2020 Kentucky Derby contenders, but he’s since been shut down with an ankle injury.

Instead, Baffert will look to win his sixth Kentucky Derby with Authentic (10-1) and Thousand Words (12-1) at the 146th Run for the Roses. While Authentic is a three-time graded stakes winner, the added distance of the Kentucky Derby might be too much for a horse that was barely able to hold off Honor A.P. in the San Felipe Stakes and then couldn’t hold him off over the extra 1/16th of a mile at the Santa Anita Derby.

Another shocker: Demling is high on Major Red, even though he’s a huge 75-1 long shot in the latest Kentucky Derby odds 2020. He’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Major Fed is trained by Greg Foley, a two-time training title winner at Churchill Downs who has worked with multiple graded-stakes winners.

The three-year-old colt turned heads with a win on New Year’s Day at the Fair Grounds in his second career start. Then, he ran second at the Risen Star Stakes behind Modernist and ahead of Ny Traffic. After being hampered by outside post starts at the Louisiana Derby and Matt Winn Stakes, he placed again at the Indiana Derby in arguably the best race of his career in July and appears to be trending up heading into the Kentucky Derby 2020.

How to make 2020 Kentucky Derby picks

In addition, Demling is high on a massive long shot whose style fits Churchill Downs perfectly. He’s only sharing which horse to back, and his entire projected 2020 Kentucky Derby leaderboard, here.
